Roundtable notes
We had 2 guests tonight to discuss Eagle projects and
camping and hiking opportunities in the area.
One speaker was Nate Thomas with the Lookout Mountain
Conservancy and they have several potential Eagle projects as well as Troop
projects.
Here
is a handout he provided with just a few of the projects. His contact info
is Nate Thomas – 423-424-3882. The web site is
lookoutmountainconservancy.org.
Our second guest was Walt Hodges who is a volunteer
with Lula Lake Land Trust atop Lookout Mtn. Walt is an Eagle scout and
previously was the Land Manager of Lula Lake. Lula Lake is open to the
public the first and last Saturday of each month. They will also let scout
units camp on the property when available. Noel Durant is the current Land
manager and can be reached at 076-639-3099 for more info related to camping
opportunities. The web site is
www.lulalake.org. Walt also discussed the Nickajack Connector trail
which is the first part of a trail that will link Lula Lake Land Trust to
Cloudland Canyon State Park, more info can be found at
www.lulalake.org/participate/events.asp?event_id=501. This is a multi
use trail (hike, bike, and horse) and the first section is currently open
with a 5.5 mile out and back trail, total of 11 miles.

Previous Notes
We discussed the US Mint Scout coins. They can be
purchased
here. Also discussed was that a questionnaire will be sent out
soon to get some feed back on Roundtables. This will be anonymous so
feel free to provide your thoughts. We discussed the months theme of
Leadership in a round table fashion. It seemed to go well. We
also discussed the new Historical Merit Badges (here)
and the new Geocaching Merit Badge (here).
April's theme is Forestry and we had Alan Orth and Ed Lang
from the NF come in and talk about the Conasauga NF and what opportunities
are available for the scouts in the area.
For those interested in the Knot Master program check out
Troop 994 in Woodstock, GA. This is where I got my info and it is in
MS Word format so you can edit the info. They also have a PowerPoint
form for a tracking card for the scouts to keep track of knots tied and when
they were signed off. Troop 994's site is
here. My copy is here
and I added 2 knots to the list and some additional info I felt was
important.

March's theme is Physical Fitness. Are you familiar
with the Scout Fit program? Learn more
here.

February's theme is Citizenship. I found a sample of
questions from the Naturalization test along with the answers. See how
many of them you can answer then give see how many the scouts get.

The January theme is Winter Camping. On the BSA web
site there is supplemental training called
Beginning Cold Weather Camping. Check it out.
